Trauma and Global Health (TGH) Program

TGH program in Sri Lanka is part of  four-nation program co-ordinated by McGill University, Montreal (click to see), comprising of research and capacity building. I am consultant to the Sri Lanka program led by Chamindra Weerackody, Social Scientist attached to People's Rural Development Association (PRDA) (click to see), Sri Lanka.

The initial research was conducted in East (Batticaloa area where there are people affected by tsunami and conflict), South (Hambantota area mainly among people affected by tsunami ) and West (Puttalam area among Muslim refugees from the North who had been expelled by LTTE militants in 1990). The research carried out in the East has not been fully analysed yet but that from other areas have been used for three publications - the book Mental Health and Wellbeing (see column on left), and two papers (click on reference to see): (1) Weerackody, C. and Fernando, S. (2008) ‘Field Report: Perceptions of social stratification and wellbeing in refugee communities in North-Western Sri Lanka’, International Journal of Migration, Health and Social Care 4(2), 47-56; (b) Fernando, S. and Weerackody, C. (2009) ‘Challenges in developing community mental health services in Sri Lanka’, Journal of Health Management, 11(1) 195-208.

An earlier paper, Fernando, S. (2005) 'Mental Health Care in Low Income Countries; Challenges and Innovations,' International Journal of Migration, Health and Social Care, 1(1), 13-18 is also worth looking at.
